Do you run? šš» Do you want to run? šāāļø Do you want to run better?
Here's a few tips for ya:
š Get A Proper Shoe Fitted: The only equipment necessary for running (unless you're a barefoot runner!) is a pair of shoes & what you put on your feet is important: make sure they are the correct size, they are designed for they type of running you plan on doing (trail, marathon, sprints, etc.), and can accommodate any particular irregularities you may have (pronations, high/low arches, bunions, etc.), or think about adding orthotics if needed.
š Start Slowly: To reduce your risk of injury, start with slower, shorter runs & gradually increase your time and the distance. This is also important when 'breaking in' new shoes too!
š Focus on Form: Relax, keep your stride length short, land quietly with each step landing underneath your hips, and lift your knee to begin a new stride, not pushing off or pulling back with the toes.
š Be Efficient: Landing harshly, bouncing up & down, or pushing off your toes all create friction. Excessive pounding creates more shock to your muscles, joints, and ligaments - land lightly and run smoothly. Keep elbows close to the body to reduce excess energy burn and aid normal body alignment.
š Donāt Give Up: If you are just starting out as a runner, take heart! You can build up your endurance with time - even marathoners had to begin somewhere! If you stick with it, soon you will be able to look back and visually see the progress and how far you have come!
š Have fun!: Running? Fun? Yes! Running can be very fun and relaxing. If you are having a difficult time by yourself, consider inviting a friend or a trainer to run along side you, or joining a running group at your local gym. Sometimes all we need is just the accountability and encouragement of knowing someone else is with us in it!
