Put Your Best Fork Forward

March means National Nutrition Month®. This annual nutrition education and information campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics comes in the nick time to help us boost our fitness and health resolutions for the year.

🍴 Each one of us holds the tools to make choices for a healthier lifestyle. 🍴

Change doesn't have to be huge and overwhelming: incorporating small changes throughout the course of this month-long campaign that continue into the rest of 2017 will help us to gradually shift our eating styles and lead to healthier lives overall.

For the rest of the month, I will be posting infographics from choosemyplate.gov that can help us make small adjustments to our daily habits; and what better way to kick start our journey, than with the first meal of the day: Brekkie!

Do you like your breakfast a little on the sweet side? Try substituting an artificially sweetened yogurt with a naturally sweetened one or choose an unsweetened yogurt and add honey to it - to 'sweeten' the choice even further, choose a Greek or Icelandic to bump up your protein intake! *A note on adding a granola to your parfait: try to pay attention to the serving size of the cereal, and choose one high in fiber and low in sugar content.

If you are like me & prefer savory over sweet in the morning, try these substitutions to make your mornings more nutrient dense without sacrificing flavor:

One flour tortilla has three times the overall calories, carbs, & fats of a corn tortilla of the same size, while the sodium is more than 300mg higher in a flour tortilla.

Leave out the sausage & add black beans to decrease your sodium & fat content even further!

Don't forget to top your new breakfast picks with a tasty salsa!
