Stop Dieting!

Diets? Who's got time for 'em?

You start one, promise you'll stick with this one, are successful for a few days, but one tiny slip-up later you're on a one-way highway guilt trip & are binge eating everything in sight...

OR, you stick with your diet. You meet your goals! You are feeling great! So you decide to end your diet (after all, it was just a brief time you set aside to shed a few pounds, right?). Then, bam! Faster than you can whistle Dixie, you are not only back where you started, but may be even more miserable than when you started your diet in the first place!

Sound about right?

Life doesn't have to look like this & eating well does not have to be so discouraging!

Hopefully this month you have learned how to incorporate small changes in your day-to-day lives & have made a few to set you and your family on a path toward a healthier lifestyle. You do not have to have an all-or-nothing mindset about eating healthy: typically that is not a sustainable way to affect change in your life. Remember, we want to avoid diet-disasters!

Positive change happens one day at a time, over a period of time.

**Note to our instant-gratification culture: six-pac abs don't happen over night, after eating a single piece of celery during yesterday's lunch...

Do you remember learning to brush your teeth? Think about it this way: Maybe you have been brushing your teeth every day for as long as you can remember & it is just a part of your life now, but maybe your mother remembers how much time it took and how much of a struggle it was to get that habit to stick! Making a change to exercise or eat more veggies or drink more water may be a struggle now, but if you keep at it, soon it will just be a part of your daily life.

Make one small change this month, then next month, add in another healthy choice that works for YOU. Choices that YOU can learn how to grow and incorporate into your own lifestyle, but that will make a positive difference to your health down the road. Change doesn't look the same on every body.

Let's pause for a moment and address one issue: I'm not talking about giving up everything you love to eat. But maybe instead of eating Oreo's every day, have one every other day next month, and one a week the next month, until that food that was meant to be a treat in the first place, not an integral portion of your diet, becomes a once-in-a-while treat again!

Also, we need to shift our focus from what we can't eat, which tends to condition our minds to crave those foods we don't need in our bodies every day even more, to what we CAN eat to fuel our bodies for success, creating healthy from within.

When we eat real food that our bodies recognize as fuel, our bodies function properly on the inside & out. And I'll let you in on a little secret, after you have been eating well for a while, you will actually begin to crave fruits and veggies and that other stuff just doesn't taste quite as good as you thought it did! Don't believe me, try it - I dare you! :-)

Still skeptical that food can change how your body feels and performs? Just watch the documentary Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead & you're mind will be changed immediately! Food IS medicine people!

I could go on & on, but this post is meant to encourage you to continue to make small changes in your life, to encourage you to change your mindset on dieting, and to let you know you don't have to do it alone: if you don't know where to start, or need a little more advice on what other changes you could be making, maybe I can help you take that next step!

Do these things to create an environment of healthy eating for yourself that becomes a lifestyle, not just a diet for merely a season. Your body will thank you & your family will thank you! Because "anyone who takes no time for his health, must later take time for his illness" - true story!
